Discovery Day is a great introduction to GoTEN and the people we serve. It is designed to be a series of experiences that will help you better understand both unreached people and refugees living here in Phoenix. By the end of the day, you will not only have a broadened perspective of what God is doing among these amazing people, but have a clear on ramp to continue to serve them.
In Partnership with a local ministry – GoTEN Ministries, this one day mission trip is a day of cross-cultural experiences that will help you discover other faiths and the people who follow them. Leave your passport at home; God is bringing people to us! Visit GoTEN.org to learn more.
There are thousands of legally resettled refugees that have moved to our city. They need help learning English, navigating our systems, and adapting to our culture, but what they really want is an American friend. GoTEN serves as a bridge between newly arriving refugees and Christians who want to be hospitable and serve marginalized people. We do this through creating Life Skills Centers in refugee neighborhoods and inviting volunteers from local churches to help our new neighbors learn English, get jobs, and experience Christian community.
Requirement: Participants must be age 16 and up.
Time: You will report to Life Skills Center at Nineteen Apartments at 8:45am. (4802 N 19th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85015). Map attached. Serving day will conclude around 3 or 4pm.
Here's what you can expect during this One Day Serve:
- We'll begin with an overview and vision of GoTEN ministries. You'll get an overview of the Refugee experience.
- You will then spend time serving in one of the many different areas of need, ranging from community gardening to helping prepare someone for the US Citizenship test. Each serve opportunity is chosen based on the current need fo the community in which you'll be serving and is subject to change. The staff will ensure you're properly prepared for whatever it is!
- We will end our time with a debrief with tangible ways you can continue to serve with our international refugee community.
Some additional notes:
- When preparing for the day, feel free to dress casually. Please ensure your knees and shoulder are covered in modesty and respect.
